About Loaf:
Loaf is a community bakery and cookery school located in Stirchley, South Birmingham. Our guiding principle is to provide great food for our community and build community through great food.
As we go forward into 2025 we are looking to recruit new team members, especially with our new exciting move into the Stirchley Cooperative Development later in the year, which will give us the opportunity to reshape our work space.
We are a Workers Cooperative which means our team collectively manages and runs the business equally. We encourage each other to keep up with the Co-op values and principles.
We are looking for someone who has a passion for good food and an interest in working in a workers Co-op.
There are different areas of responsibility at Loaf, and as we co-own the business, there is no boss and we are all paid the same real Living Wage. About this role:
We are looking for someone to help assist in the running of our Cookery School. First started from Tom Bakers house in 2009 we still maintain a small scale, practical, hands on approach to teaching.
Assisting in the prep and setting up for our classes and the cleaning down
Creating a welcoming environment for our students and ensuring the tutors are supported
Handling customer feedback, emails and social media
Maintaining hygiene records including COSHH and HACCP
Liaising with the team on Course dates and future course planning
Engaging actively in our working groups and meetings
Answering questions about our business, products, baking processes, cookery school, co-ops and the Stirchley Co-operative Development

Job Description:
Co-op Member – Area of work: Cookery School
Role outline for shop:
This role entails the day to day running of our Cookery school. You will work independently and alongside other co-op members of Loaf – full training will be given. There is also the opportunity for the interested candidate to get involved in other areas of our co-op.
Lunch and refreshments are provided each shift, a loaf to take home each shift (if available) plus any leftovers that don’t get donated, and the use of Suma wholesale for personal use.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensuring the Cookery School runs smoothly on shift – working with tutors to set up for courses, assisting them with anything they need during the class, cleaning down.
- Hygiene daily checks and recording. Including COSHH and HACCP compliance.
- Maintaining a safe and hygienic workplace, with a high standard of cleanliness.
- Liaising with team members about future classes and potential new classes
- Maintaining relationships with our external tutors; ensuring they can deliver the classes to the highest standard.
- Engaging with customers, assisting attendees with any special needs or support; answering queries, representing the business.
- Contribution to both team and working group meetings and company development.
- Any other duties as required to promote and assist in the smooth running of Loaf.
Essential skills & experience:
- Experience in a commercial food service environment and keeping up with food safety and hygiene standards
- Experience delivering excellent customer service
- Proven passion and enthusiasm for and knowledge of freshly prepared food
- Highly organised with good time keeping skills
- Self-motivated and able to take the initiative
- Understanding and demonstrating of Loaf’s values
- Ability to work as part of a small team
- Problem solver attitude
- Adaptable mindset – every working day will be a different challenge and experience
Desirable:
- Food hygiene qualification – Level 2 or above
- Experience or strong interest in learning how to make bread, pastries, cakes and our lunches
- Passion for learning and teaching, helping people to get the most our of their experience.
- Presenting our business on social media
As a workers cooperative, all team members at Loaf are encouraged to have input into the running of the company, therefore the successful candidate will be expected to be an integral part of the small team at Loaf HQ, and embody the values of Loaf in the way they apply themselves to the job. We expect our team members to attend meetings and engage in our working groups which shape Loaf and its smooth running. After a successful six month probationary period, the individual will be asked to become a full member of the cooperative.
Hours and Pay:
The role will be salaried at £12.60 per hour this is our current flat rate of pay, though this is reviewed annually. Full time equivalent ££1,310.40.
We are a Real Living Wage employer.
Annual leave allowance is 30 days per year (pro rata and inclusive of bank holidays). Some of this allowance must be taken during HQ shutdown which occurs around Christmas and New Year.
Hours of work for this position are 24 hours across 3 shifts, evenings and Saturdays.
